Because Owning And Flying Your Beechcraft Can Be Done Safely AND For Less Money!
  Plexiglas/Acrylic Window Scratch Removal

Over the years, have the mechanics and avionics technicians beat up the inside of your windshield? Have you left headsets and sunglasses up there to slide around or vibrate in flight? In either case, those situations have left you with some unsightly and possibly distracting scratches in your high dollar Beechcraft windshield or side glass.

Bonanza owner, John R. of Florida has provided a pirep for his results in scratch removal using the Novus scratch removal system available from Amazon HERE for about $10.

WINDOW SCRATCHES OR OTHER BLEMISHES INCLUDING LIGHT HAZING CAN BE EASILY REMOVED

FOR LESS THAN $15.00 AND A LITTLE ELBOW GREASE.

DESPITE CARE TAKEN IN CLEANING ACRYLIC WINDOWS AND WINDSCREEN ON N7835V -1978 V35B,

THERE WERE SOME CARELESS ACTIONS WITH HEADSETS AND SUN VISORS THAT OVER TIME LEFT NOTICEABLE

SCRATCHES ON THE INSIDE OF A 3 YEAR OLD WINDSCREEN. ANNOYING AND UNSIGHTLY, IT WAS TIME TO REMEDY.

I SEARCHED FOR ACRYLIC CLEANERS AND AFTER A THOROUGH REVIEW, I WENT WITH NOVUS.

YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS FOR ACQUIRING NOVUS. I CHOSE TO PURCHASE FROM EBAY AND SAVED A CSOB $5.05.

1)       DIRECT FROM THE NOVUS WEBSITE   WWW.NOVUSPOLISH.COM  $19.00 INCLUDING SHIPPING

2)       EBAY $8.95 AND $5.00 SHIPPING USPS OR UPS. TOTAL $13.95

THERE ARE THREE NOVUS APPLICATIONS.  CLEAN & SHINE, FINE SCRATCH REMOVER AND HEAVY SCRATCH REMOVER.

EACH CAN BE BOUGHT SEPARATELY OR WITH A STARTER KIT CONTAINING ALL THREE  IN 2 OUNCE OR A LAGER 8 OUNCE SIZE.

I PURCHASED THE 2 OZ. KIT ON EBAY WHICH WAS PLENTY. suggestions

Plastic Clean & Shine #1:   USE CLEAN & SHINE FIRST TO CLEAN AND PREP

(as well as  AFTER USE OF #2 OR #3 to finish the job.)

Gently cleans all plastics without scratching. Contains no abrasives. Leaves a smooth, clean, greaseless shine

1.      If the surface is extremely dirty, apply NOVUS No. 1 liberally and wipe using long, sweeping strokes.

2.      Do not use pressure at this time or large dirt particles may scratch the plastic.

3.      Re-apply NOVUS No. 1. Polish using short, circular strokes with a clean portion of the cloth.

4.      When surface is thoroughly clean and uniformly covered, buff to a slippery glaze with a clean portion of the cloth. Surfaces buffed to a high glaze are more resistant to dust and future scratching.

Fine Scratch Remover #2:  BEST USED FOR DISCOLORATION OR HAZING OF ACRYLIC.

i FOUND IT WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO REMOVE ORDINARY AND MORE NOTICEABLE, SEVERE SCRATCHES. i WENT DIRECTLY FROM # 1 TO # 3 and back to #2  then # 1 for the final shine after scratch removal.

Removes fine scratches, haziness and abrasions from most plastics. With repeated use, NOVUS No. 2 restores faded and discolored plastics. Removes the damage instead of filling it in, Buffs out quickly and after restoring, seals with a coat of polish.

1.      Observe condition of the surface to be treated. The deeper the scratches, the greater the pressure required to remove them. If the surface is dirty, clean with NOVUS No.1 before applying NOVUS No. 2.

2.      Apply NOVUS No. 2 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches. Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.

3.      When the worst scratches have been polished out, reapply NOVUS No.2 uniformly in a circular motion to the entire surface using short, circular strokes and light pressure. Allow to dry to a light haze.

4.      Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the surface to a slippery glaze using firm, short strokes. This procedure is imperative in achieving the best results.

5.      For heavy scratches application of NOVUS No. 3 may be required.

6.      Follow with NOVUS No. 1 for best results.

Heavy Scratch Remover  #3: ELIMINATE REMOVER.

(use after #1 is applied to clean the area being treated. )

Removes heavy scratches from acrylic surfaces. Use when damage is too severe to be restored with NOVUS No. 2 polish.

Requires use of NOVUS No. 2 for final finishing.

1.      Apply NOVUS No. 3 liberally. Using a clean, soft cloth, polish with a firm back-and-forth motion at right angles to the scratches.

Keep the cloth saturated with polish at all times.

2.      Continue polishing until only fine scratches remain. Using cloth, remove all remaining polish, this is very important!

3.      Using a clean cloth, apply NOVUS No. 2 in a circular motion uniformly to entire surface.

Polish using light pressure until NOVUS No. 2 dries to a light haze.

4.      Using a clean portion of the cloth, buff the surface clean. Follow with a light applications of NOVUS No. 2

then No. 1 again  for best results.

SUGGESTIONS & TIPS:

1)      Do bring a pair of work gloves. I found that to properly apply the formulas on scratches and blemishes low on the windscreen, one’s palm must be up when applying the circular motion and pressure to remove the scratches. This places your knuckles against the glare-shield and with the back & forth circular motion will rub your hand knuckles bloody.

2)      Do bring an 6 to 12 inch firm handled spatula of sorts that your clothe can be wrapped around the end for the tight areas between the window and glare-shield.

3)      Do bring an extra microfiber cloth. The small cloth applicators in the kit are fine for the area and scratch cleaning, but not for the overall finish polish and cleaning at the end of the repair session

Thanks John for this pirep. Hopefully it can help other Beech owners get some of those unsightly scratches out of their acrylic windows and windscreens.
