For a long while the piston engine industry
has known that spark plug resistance is critical to good ignition system
performance. Recently, information has been widely circulated to suggest that
5,000 ohms is the top end of acceptability for our piston engine spark plugs.
High resistance values in spark plugs will make the magnetos work much harder
than plugs that are under the 5,000 ohm level. Out of spec plugs contribute to
hard starting and in general they foul the combustion event inside your
cylinders.

fumbling with the test leads of your volt/ohm meter!
Thus the display accurately indicates plug resistance in K-Ohms. If the plug
is open or not present (simulated by pushing your finger in) it will indicate
around 10K Ohms (10 volts minus the loss across the current injector).
Remove the cap and replace the A23 battery if this ‘finger test’ indicates
less than 8.00K Ohms. A spare battery is included. A chart is printed on the
tool indicating acceptable resistance ranges.
PS: Per the FAA FARs, removing, cleaning and
replacing your spark plugs is allowable owner maintenance. Check out the

Simply insert the plug, top barrel end first, put
the cap on, compress and activate the momentary switch. Red light = <500
ohms or >5000 ohms = BAD. Green light + Beep Tone = <5000 ohms, >500 Ohms =
GOOD!
