This narrative is courtesy of Baron
owner, James A., who receently developed a mounting system for his iPad
to the center of his Cygnet dual control yoke. His mount is shown with a
full size iPad but could easily accommodate a mini.
The iPad is perfectly located so it is above the pilots
legs when he or she enters or exits the aircraft, it is out of the way of the
rams horns, and does not block the quadrant or any other switches.
I have a Ram EZ Roller cradle for my iPad. It has three mounting positions for
the Ram ball mount. I mounted a Ram ball (RAP-B-202U - Composite 4-hole) on the
leftmost position on the back of the cradle (I have a fan mounted in the
central position).
The Cygnet yoke has two holes, 1.5” apart, drilled and tapped for 10 x 32
threads, on the top and bottom of the center of the yoke.
The Ram Ball mount
(RAM-B-202U - Aluminum 8-hole) has two holes that are exactly 1.5” apart. This
matches the hole spacing on the Cygnet yoke exactly.
The flange of the Ball
mount will extend about 3/8”-1/2” over the edge of the yoke (towards the tail).
I marked the line for the overhang and the cut off the excess part of the
flange with a hack saw, ensuring I did not cut too close to where the stem is
mounted to the flange (the stem holds the ball and is either welded or press
fit into the flange).
I spray painted the flange cut, put a thin piece of
rubber tape on the bottom and then mounted it upside down on the lower side of
the yoke using two 10-32 allen cap screws with lock washers. Choose the screw
lengths so the screws don’t penetrate more than about 1/4” into the yoke.
Then I simply connected the two balls (cradle and yoke)
with a Ram medium length socket arm (RAP-B-201U). The entire assembly is well
above the pilot’s legs and so does not need to be disturbed when entering or
exiting the cockpit. However the assembly can be removed with a quick spin of
the tension knob on the socket arm.
